Membership Application

How to Apply
DMA offers several pathways to membership based on your education, experience, and professional background.

  1. Meet Eligibility Requirements Applicants must be at least 18 years old, actively teaching dance, and have taught dance as a teacher or assistant teacher for a period of not less than three years out of the past five years.
  2. Connect with a Chapter or Choose the Virtual Option Connect with a local DMA chapter or register through Nationals for a virtual syllabus review and examination by submitting the application below.
  3. Choose Your Membership Pathway
    Certified Educator MemberDMA certification path for educators who complete the DMA certification process.

    Certification is available in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, and Acrobatics.

    Applicants must pass an examination with a minimum score of 75% in:

    • One subject they teach if they teach only one dance subject; or
    • At least two subjects they teach if they teach more than one dance subject.
    Partnering MemberFor educators affiliated with recognized professional organizations within the dance community.

    Applicants must submit current documentation showing membership in an approved dance or acrobatic organization that requires entry by examination.

    Degreed MemberFor educators who hold formal academic degrees in dance.

    Applicants must submit a copy of their earned degree.

    Professional MemberFor dance arts industry practitioners who actively contribute to the dance field through professional work.

    Applicants must provide documentation of their professional experience, such as a playbill, program book, check stub, or other supporting materials. Professional experience may include circuit or convention teaching, choreographing, directing, performance, or other industry-level work.

    Teachers Training School (TTS) Graduate MemberFor educators who have successfully completed and graduated from DMA Teachers Training School.

    Applicants must have successfully completed and graduated from the DMA Teachers Training School program.

  4. Complete Your Application
    • Certified Educator Member applicants:
      • Complete the examination application and follow the testing process for your selected subject(s).

    • Partnering, Degreed, Professional, and TTS Graduate applicants:
      Complete the National Membership Application and submit the required documentation for your membership pathway.
